First 2nd XV Game - 31/9/06

Kev has kindly sent this match report from the inaugral 2nd XV game on Saturday against Bakewell. Cheers Kev.......

Sheffield Oaks 2nd/Sheffield University 4th XV 45 - 0 Bakewell 2nd XV

The revived second team took 8 students, a 52 year old Tigers Vet., plus Nipper, Pesky, and Kev to pit there skills against Bakewell 2nds. Kindly the home side had enough spare men to even out the sides, though with the Oaks team barely on first name terms, Bakewell were surely firm favourites.
After a walk in full kit through the town centre to get to the pitch it was the Bakewell side that had a brighter start overloading the breakdown with their bulkier more experienced pack, Oaks had to work well around the fringes and repeatedly picked up second phase turnovers -which were even more frequently turned to penalties by the Bakewell forwards. After this initial period of pressure the fitter Oaks side started to steal more ball and with strong rucking going forward made a good platform for the backs to exploit the space.
By the end of the first half Oaks had a 14-0 lead. This would have been greater if not for a forward pass, and Kev had a perfectly good try disallowed after diving on a lose ball in goal - apparently the three knock-ons that occurred prior were enough to rule this out, if only we'd had the Hornsea touch judge.
The generation gap really showed in the second half, even as Bakewell injuries resulted in Oaks going a player down, the fitness and precision of the Oaks side showed as they scored another try. And another, and another, and another, and another, and another. The ever merciful ref. offered Bakewell the opportunity to end after 70 minutes, with nothing more to gain for either side the whistle was blown and Oaks were off to celebrate by picking up some tarts in Bakewell centre.

Lets hope Nipper can keep the 2nd XV momentum going all season.

Hullensians Game 30/9/06

Hullensians 52 - 7 Sheffield Oaks

This was the worst defeat we have suffered in a long long time.
We were comprehensively beaten by a much better organised and committed team.
There were really no standout features from our point of view in this match, barring Stew's first try.
I think we should consign this game to history, and try to move on to playing the same style of rugby we were playing at the beginning of the season......
Cup game against Old Mod's next Saturday 7/10/06 - Be Available !!
