Hornsea Game 23/9/06

Sheffield Oaks 6 - 15 Hornsea

A team missing it's regular scrum half and stand off pairing is always going to struggle. Add to this the captain retiring injured midway through the 1st half, the scrum half going to centre and flanker moving to scrum half, second row getting sin binned late in the game and some more than dubious decisions given against us, you can see we weren't in the best of shape.

Having said this, we should have still easily won the game!

Hornsea's pack were strong and dominated the scrums for the first 1/4 of the game but tired quickly and things were pretty even from then on. We did do well in the lineouts securing our ball and nicking a few from them too. But, we never really got going as a team for most of the game - although territorially we were superior for almost the entire 80 minutes, the difference between the sides were that we couldn't capitalise on the possession and position we had where Hornsea did so more effectively.
Their first try was a pure breakaway from an intercepted pass in midfield. The Hornsea centre read it well and managed to run a good way to score under the posts which was converted. We made the pressure we had tell with a well taken penalty from Jim soon after, another penalty followed in the first half keeping the scores pretty even at the half. The second half started well with good possession and pressure. A defensive kick from Hornsea was watched into the dead ball area by Jim, and everyone was sure it was on the line and therefore dead meaning we could capitalise on the field position we had gained. Unfortunately, their linesman saw things differently and a 5 yard scrum was awarded to Hornsea. From here, they whipped the ball along the line and the winger scored in the corner, the conversion was missed. I realise that this is an amateur game and that people running the line are doing so as a favour for both clubs, but the referee should be in better position to make the final decision as there are inevitably going to be occasions like this that will occur and influence the outcome of the game......
Hornsea landed a penalty soon after and despite continued pressure for the rest of the game we were unable to convert this into more points. Selly was binned late on, again a more than dubious decision as he was rucking one of their players out of an offside position less than 5 yards from their line - the ref saw things differently though.

All in all a disappointing game and a disappointing result. Let's hope Darren makes a speedy recovery and we manage to put this game behind us for our visit to Hullensians next week.
